Xi Jinping highlights trade progress in talks with Donald Trump, warns over Taiwan Issue

BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping said discussions with US President Donald Trump had produced encouraging developments on trade during the opening of a high-profile two-day summit in Beijing, while also cautioning that tensions over Taiwan could seriously damage bilateral relations.

The meeting began at the Great Hall of the People with a formal state reception that included an honour guard and schoolchildren waving flags and flowers. Xi stressed that stable ties between the world’s two largest economies were essential for global stability and prosperity.

When cooperation prevails, both countries gain benefits; confrontation harms both sides,” Xi said during remarks made in front of the media.

Trump responded by praising Xi’s leadershipand described the gathering as potentially one of the most significant summits in recent years.

According to Chinese state media, closed-door discussions between the two leaders focused heavily on trade negotiations. Officials said both sides had achieved what Beijing called a “balanced and positive” outcome after economic teams met ahead of the summit.

The negotiations are aimed at preserving the trade truce reached last October, when Washington paused steep tariffs on Chinese imports and Beijing refrained from restricting exports of critical rare earth materials used in advanced technology and defence manufacturing.

Taiwan also emerged as a major issue during the talks. Xi reportedly warned Trump that mishandling the Taiwan matter could push relations toward conflict and create a highly dangerous situation. China continues to claim Taiwan as its territory, while the United States maintains military and strategic support for the island.

Several leading American business figures accompanied Trump during the visit, including Elon Musk, Jensen Huang, and Tim Cook. Trump has repeatedly called for greater access for US companies in Chinese markets.

The summit schedule includes additional meetings, a state banquet, and cultural visits, giving both leaders extended time for discussions on trade, technology, artificial intelligence, and geopolitical tensions.

Analysts noted that the diplomatic landscape has shifted since Trump’s previous visit to China in 2017. While both governments remain interested in maintaining economic cooperation, ongoing disputes over tariffs, technology exports, Taiwan, and the Middle East continue to complicate relations between Washington and Beijing.
