KARACHI: A 36-year-old woman was found dead inside a flat in Karachi’s Defence Phase 8 on Monday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Shumaila. According to preliminary police findings, she is suspected to have died by suicide after sustaining injuries to her hamstrings.
Police shifted the body to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for a post-mortem examination.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding her death and gather information about her family and personal background.
In a separate incident, an elderly couple who had recently returned from Canada were found murdered inside their home in North Karachi, prompting police to register a double-murder case.
The case was registered at Sir Syed Police Station on the complaint of Muhammad Anwar, brother of the deceased man, under the relevant provisions of the law.
The victims were identified as Yameen and his wife, Nafisa Akhtar.
According to the complainant, Yameen had started renovation work at the house after returning from Canada and had asked his sister to vacate the property.
Anwar said he became suspicious when the couple stopped responding to his phone calls. He subsequently visited their residence, unlocked the door with a duplicate key and discovered the bodies in a pool of blood in the television lounge before informing the police.
The complainant suspected that unidentified assailants had killed the couple for unknown reasons.
Post-mortem examinations were conducted at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Investigators said both victims had suffered serious head injuries, suggesting that a heavy object may have been used in the attack.
Police are yet to trace the labourers who had been working at the property. Investigators are also questioning workers in the neighbourhood to establish the sequence of events and identify those responsible.
Meanwhile, Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar sought a report on the killings from SSP Central.
He directed police to investigate all aspects of the case, take immediate measures to establish the facts and ensure compliance with legal requirements. He also ordered the submission of a report outlining the incident and preliminary findings.
