US announces first sanctions relief on Syria after Trump’s unexpected declaration

WASHINGTON: Trump administration has announced its first tangible actions to ease sanctions on Syria, signaling a potential thaw in U.S. Syrian relations.

On Friday, the U.S. Department of the Treasury unveiled broad relief measures allowing new investment and private sector activity in Syria, aligning with President Trump’s “America First” strategy.

Concurrently, the State Department issued a waiver to the 2019 Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act, aimed at enabling humanitarian efforts and regional stability.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the waiver would help provide essential services such as electricity, water, and sanitation, and support humanitarian aid across Syria.

The relief permits transactions involving Syrian petroleum products and financial services, marking a notable departure from previous strict sanctions.

Rubio described the actions as “the first step on delivering on the president’s vision of a new relationship between Syria and the United States,” suggesting a potential recalibration of U.S. policy toward Damascus amid ongoing regional complexities.
