WEB DESK: A new controversy has arisen in the Delhi High Court amid ongoing tensions between Indian politics and the judiciary.
A petition has been filed against the celebration of Muslims’ religious festival, Eid ul-Adha, with efforts to ban it. Indian lawyer Vinay Jindal, under the orders of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has submitted a plea demanding that permission not be granted for slaughtering animals, particularly cows, on June 7th during Eid ul-Adha.
The petition states that, “In Modi’s India, even the fundamental right of Muslims to sacrifice is being taken away.” Human rights organizations have condemned this move as illegal and against humanity, highlighting that millions of animals are sacrificed annually in India during Eid.
Typically, between 2 to 5 million animals are slaughtered during this festival across the country, but recent measures aim to eliminate this tradition.
This campaign against religious freedom, especially under the patronage of Modi’s government, targets Muslims’ worship and religious rituals. Lawmakers and Hindutva organizations continue to target Muslim traditions, and by declaring the religious obligation of sacrifice a crime, they seek to marginalize Muslims further.
Despite the efforts of the judiciary, Indian courts appear to overlook the actions of Modi’s government. According to Article 25 of the Indian Constitution, Muslims are guaranteed religious freedom. However, even with directives from the Supreme Court promoting communal harmony, these are being disregarded.
This move represents a new conspiracy against minorities, where the bloodshed associated with sacrifice is being used as a pretext to restrict religious freedom. Before Eid, Muslim communities find themselves targeted in courtrooms, with pro-government lawyers attacking their religious practices.
Under Modi’s leadership, the rights and religious freedoms of minorities are being systematically targeted under the guise of law, constituting a serious violation of the fundamental principles enshrined in India’s Constitution.
