LAKKI MARWAT: Two suspected militants, including a suicide bomber, were killed in an armed encounter with police during an operation in Lakki Marwat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday.
According to police, the operation was launched in the Gandi Chowk area of Sarai Naurang tehsil after authorities received reports of a suspicious vehicle with tinted windows.
A heavy police contingent was dispatched to the location. As officers approached, the occupants of the vehicle attempted to escape and opened fire on the police party, triggering an exchange of gunfire.
Police retaliated, killing two militants associated with the banned outfit Fitna al-Khawarij, including a suspected suicide bomber. A third terrorist sustained injuries but managed to flee, prompting authorities to launch a search operation to arrest him.
A police spokesperson said weapons, a banned organisation’s flag, women’s burqas and other prohibited materials were recovered from the bodies of the slain militants.
In a separate incident in June, a suicide bombing near a mosque in Lakki Marwat claimed the lives of at least two civilians, including a two-year-old child, while 10 others were injured.
Police said the attacker, riding an explosives-laden motorcycle, attempted to approach a mosque in the Khairokhel Pakka area during Friday prayers. Members of a local peace committee opened fire on him before he could reach the mosque.
The gunfire triggered an explosion, killing the bomber and causing a powerful blast near the place of worship.
