WEB DESK: US President Donald Trump has reiterated his assertion of averting an Indo-Pak conflict, stating that his warning to impose trade tariffs compelled both nations to reconsider and pull back from the edge of war.
Speaking to US troops in Japan, former President Trump stated that India had been on the brink of engaging in conflict with Pakistan, but he intervened by leveraging economic pressure rather than resorting to military measures.
He remarked that India had considered fighting Pakistan, but he warned them that such action would lead to trade disruption and the imposition of massive tariffs on both nations.
According to Trump, this threat was enough for both sides to back down, leading to a ceasefire between the nuclear-armed neighbors. He described this as one of the most significant diplomatic achievements of his administration.
Trump emphasized his confidence in tariffs as an unparalleled tool for foreign policy and national security, crediting them for preventing numerous global conflicts.
He claimed that during his tenure, he managed to avert eight potential wars in just eight months by implementing trade-related pressures, citing examples like Iran and Israel, Egypt and Ethiopia, and Azerbaijan and Armenia.
He concluded by asserting that no other US president had achieved as much in terms of peacebuilding or war prevention through negotiations. In his words, prior administrations were more inclined toward starting conflicts, whereas he claimed his legacy was defined by ending them.
