Trump blasts Netanyahu over Lebanon escalation, warns against beirut strike

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump reportedly delivered a sharp criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a recent phone conversation, urging Israel to halt plans for further military escalation in Lebanon and agree to a ceasefire with Hezbollah.

According to a report by Axios, Trump strongly objected to Israel’s reported intention to target Beirut, warning that such action would deepen Israel’s international isolation. During the exchange, he allegedly told Netanyahu that growing anger over Israel’s military campaign was damaging both the Israeli leader’s reputation and the country’s standing abroad.

Sources cited in the report said Trump accused Netanyahu of failing to appreciate his support and reminded him of his public efforts to defend the Israeli premier amid his ongoing corruption trial. Trump reportedly suggested that Netanyahu would be facing greater legal troubles without that backing.

The conversation came as Israeli forces expanded operations in southern Lebanon, while Iran warned that continued Israeli attacks could jeopardize ongoing negotiations with Washington. Tehran has reportedly linked progress in broader talks to a ceasefire in Lebanon.

US officials told Axios that Trump believes recent Israeli military actions have been excessive and risk undermining diplomatic efforts aimed at extending a truce and easing regional tensions. One official said the president was particularly disturbed by civilian casualties and criticized strikes that destroyed large buildings in pursuit of individual Hezbollah commanders.

At one point during the call, Trump reportedly raised his voice and questioned Israel’s military strategy. A US official described the discussion as one of the most tense interactions between the two leaders since Trump returned to office.

Another source claimed Trump dominated the conversation, with Netanyahu eventually responding that he would cooperate and ensure matters were handled appropriately.

Trump also reportedly referenced his previous public calls for Israeli President Isaac Herzog to pardon Netanyahu, who remains on trial in a long-running corruption case.

Neither Netanyahu’s office nor Israeli officials immediately commented on the reported conversation.

The reported dispute highlights growing concerns within Washington about the humanitarian impact of the conflict and the potential consequences of a broader regional escalation.
