Trump accuses China of violating Geneva agreement on tariffs and mineral trade

WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that China has breached an agreement to jointly reduce tariffs and trade restrictions on critical minerals.

Trump suggested that China was in “grave economic danger” prior to a recent deal he facilitated earlier this month.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday evening, Trump stated that he quickly negotiated a “fast deal” with China, leading both nations to suspend triple-digit tariffs for 90 days in an effort to prevent Beijing from facing a “very bad situation.”

Trump emphasized that, his tariffs—peaking at 145 percent on Chinese imports—had significantly hindered China’s ability to trade with the U.S., contributing to factory closures and civil unrest within China.

“China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US. So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!” Trump wrote.

He did not specify how China allegedly violated the agreement, which was reached following trade talks in Geneva, Switzerland, in mid-May, nor did he indicate what actions he plans to take in response to what he describes as non-compliance.
