Tragic Incident in Landhi: 7-Year-old boy killed by Truck; driver in custody

KARACHI: The alarming frequency of traffic-related fatalities in the city continues to raise public concern, with many criticizing the Sindh government for its perceived lack of action. In a heartbreaking recent case, a seven-year-old boy was fatally hit by a truck in Landhi.

Rescue officials confirmed that the young boy was riding a motorcycle with his uncle when the accident occurred. The police swiftly detained the truck driver involved, who was arrested near the scene of the incident.

The victim’s family shared that they were traveling from Future Mour towards Dawood Chowrangi when the tragedy unfolded. They blamed the accident on the poor condition of the road, which is riddled with deep potholes. The family explained that the truck was attempting to avoid a pothole when it collided with the motorcycle, leading to the child’s instant death.

The child has been identified as Saad Waqas. So far in 2026, Karachi has seen at least 223 fatalities and over 2,250 injuries resulting from traffic accidents. A significant number of these incidents involved heavy vehicles such as trailers and water tankers.Data indicates that heavy vehicles are responsible for a large share of fatalities, with at least 75 deaths linked to accidents involving such vehicles. Notably, the holy month of Ramadan has seen a spike in these deadly incidents.

Trailers have been the leading cause of fatal crashes, with 36 deaths recorded from January to mid-March. Water tankers have also contributed significantly, claiming 20 lives during the same period. The report also revealed that two water tankers were set ablaze by angry mobs at accident sites, highlighting the emotional intensity of these tragedies.

Other notable causes of death include bus accidents, which resulted in seven fatalities, and Mazda trucks with eight. Dumpers caused four deaths, accounting for roughly three percent of total fatalities this year.Overall, Karachi’s road safety crisis persists, with 223 lives lost and over 2,250 injured so far in 2026. The victims comprise 161 men, 30 women, 23 boys, and nine girls, underscoring the urgent need for improved traffic management and road conditions.
