LARKANA: Police reports indicate that a mother and her teenage daughter were allegedly victims of an ‘honour’ killing in Larkana.
According to authorities, the tragic incident took place on April 8 within the jurisdiction of Bakrani Tehsil. The accused, Ghulam Ali, also known as Ali Haider Jatoi, is accused of murdering his sister-in-law, Shahida Jatoi, who was widowed, along with her daughter, Naghma Jatoi. Following the killings, their bodies were reportedly dumped into the Indus River.
Upon receiving information, police retrieved the bodies from the river and transported them for postmortem examinations. An FIR has been registered on the complaint of a relative, Hakim Khatoon.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the killings were motivated by the victims’ refusal to accept a marriage proposal. Additionally, police reports state that the suspect vandalized the victims’ residence and set it ablaze after committing the murders. Ghulam Ali has been taken into custody along with the weapon believed to have been used. Further inquiries are ongoing, and authorities have revealed that the suspect has a prior involvement in a murder case.
The Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has taken suo motu notice of the incident, demanding a comprehensive report from the Senior Superintendent of Police, Larkana. The commission strongly condemned the killings, labeling them a serious breach of basic human rights. It emphasized that violence justified in the name of ‘honour’ is unacceptable and must be prosecuted under the law.
