WEB DESK: Indian police are investigating the murder of 17-year-old Rehan, who was allegedly killed by a group that believed his testicles could be sold for a huge sum on the black market.
Police allege that 20-year-old business student Zoheb Khan recruited the group after watching a social-media video spreading false information about the value of human testicles. Investigators say Khan claimed the organs could be sold in Gulf countries for around 12 million Indian rupees, equivalent to about £92,000.
Authorities allege that Khan even pretended to be a doctor. He reportedly purchased a white coat, stethoscope and thermometer online and used them while preparing the others for the crime.
Rehan, who earned money selling pens and key chains near Iqbal Maidan in Bhopal, was allegedly lured away from his stall on August 6. Two minors reportedly offered him Rs 100 to help with a supposed fight before taking him to an isolated location near Lower Lake.
Police say the teenager was attacked and stabbed repeatedly. Four suspects allegedly took part in the killing, while Khan is accused of directing them through a video call.
Investigators say the group kept the removed organs on ice for two days while attempting to locate a buyer. After failing to find one, Khan allegedly instructed them to dispose of the organs in different lakes.
Rehan’s body was discovered in Lower Lake on August 10. He was identified several days later using a tattoo, after his mother had reported him missing. A post-mortem examination confirmed that he had suffered fatal injuries and that his testicles had been removed.
Police have arrested Khan and 18-year-old Aamir Qureshi, while three minors have also been detained. Officers have recovered a knife believed to have been used in the attack and are searching the surrounding waters for the missing organs.
Investigators are also questioning people allegedly contacted by the group as potential buyers to determine whether an attempted sale was actually planned.
