ISLAMABAD: An individual linked to the killing of Pakistan Air Force Group Captain Asim Tariq has been transferred to police custody on a seven-day physical remand by an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad.
According to authorities, the suspect was identified during an identification parade held at Adiala Jail. Prosecutor Raja Naveed Hussain Kiyani informed the court that eyewitnesses recognized the accused during the procedure.
The investigation officer requested a 20-day remand for further inquiries, but the court granted a seven-day period and ordered the suspect to remain in police custody.
During the hearing, ATC Judge Abul Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain issued stern remarks while addressing the accused. The judge inquired about the destruction caused by the incident and emphasized the gravity of losing a national asset like Group Captain Tariq. He remarked that expressions of remorse could not undo the damage done and questioned whether regret alone could restore the victim.
The probe into the case remains active.
According to police reports, Group Captain Asim Tariq was shot and killed after he intervened to stop an alleged abduction attempt on Islamabad’s Ninth Avenue. He reportedly noticed a woman standing near a motorcycle while a man appeared to be forcibly pulling her away. The officer stopped his vehicle, prompting the woman to run toward him for safety.
Police stated that an exchange of heated words took place between Asim Tariq and the suspect before the latter opened fire. The officer was critically wounded and later succumbed to his injuries, while the assailant fled the scene.
