KARACHI: Muhammad Humayun, the man police had identified as the prime suspect in the killing of a woman and her three children in Surjani Town, was shot dead during an alleged encounter while being taken to recover the murder weapon, police said.
SSP West Tariq Elahi Mastoi told media that Humayun allegedly grabbed a police officer’s pistol during the recovery operation and opened fire as he tried to flee.
The firing left ASI Noman Sheikh wounded, according to police. Another member of the police team then returned fire, killing Humayun at the scene. Police said the weapon taken from the officer was recovered from the deceased suspect.
The SSP added that investigators also recovered an alleged murder weapon, described as a sharp-edged tool, based on information provided by Humayun.
The bodies of a woman and her three children were discovered inside their home in Sector 7-D, Surjani Town, on Monday night.
Police said the victims had sustained head injuries inflicted with a sharp-edged weapon and a heavy object. Earlier, Karachi West DIG Irfan Baloch had named Humayun as the main suspect in the case.
According to investigators, Humayun had previously rented the same house for approximately 18 months and was familiar with the family. Police said he went to the residence at around 2:30pm on the day of the incident, allegedly aware that the woman’s husband was away.
Investigators alleged that Humayun had been harassing the woman and attempted to assault her. Police said the situation escalated after a child nearby began crying, with the suspect allegedly picking up the child and hitting her against a wall.
The woman’s other two children reportedly returned from a madrassa around 3pm. Police alleged that Humayun opened the door for them before attacking and killing them.
Investigators further claimed that the suspect washed himself and the blood-stained iron rod in the bathroom before leaving the house at approximately 6pm.
Police said Humayun attempted to create the impression that the house had been targeted by robbers. However, investigators said their initial examination of the crime scene did not support the robbery theory.
Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar had taken notice of the killings and sought a detailed report from the SSP West.
He directed police to examine the incident from all angles, preserve and collect forensic evidence and establish the motive behind the deaths.
