KARACHI: Authorities in Sindh have stepped up preparedness after the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast a fresh spell of monsoon rains across the province from July 31 to August 2.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Rescue 1122, and other emergency services have been directed to remain on high alert amid concerns over heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and the possibility of flash flooding.
Preparations were reviewed during a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister’s Adviser Gianchand Esrani, where officials discussed emergency response plans, flood management, and relief arrangements for the 2026 monsoon season.
PDMA Director General Salman Shah informed the meeting that Tharparkar, Badin, and the Mirpurkhas division are expected to receive above-average rainfall. He said all relevant departments have been instructed to stay ready as the incoming weather system approaches the province.
Esrani said the PDMA is equipped to establish relief camps and provide food and essential supplies for up to 14,000 affected families if required. He also noted that the province’s central command and control room has been integrated with the PDMA to enable a rapid response during emergencies.
Rescue 1122 officials assured the meeting that teams are fully prepared to tackle urban flooding and other weather-related incidents. Mobile health units will also remain available to deliver medical assistance in areas affected by heavy rain.
Separately, the PMD warned that flash flooding could occur in parts of Kashmir, Murree, Galiyat, Islamabad, northeastern Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan. It also cautioned that rain-fed streams in Dera Ghazi Khan and northeastern Balochistan may experience flooding during the upcoming weather spell.
