Sindh govt establishes 5 member inquiry panel to probe clash among students

KARACHI: The Sindh government has established a five-member inquiry panel to probe the recent violent confrontation between two student factions at the University of Karachi, which resulted in seven injuries.

In a notification issued by the Sindh Universities and Boards Department, the inquiry committee has been tasked with investigating the incident that occurred on July 9, 2026, and is expected to submit its report within 15 days.

Leading the investigation is Dr. Hussain Mehdi, Vice Chancellor of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University in Lyari. The panel also includes Dr. Ghazanfar, Registrar of NED University of Engineering and Technology; Sarfaraz Mitlo, Dean of the Law Faculty at the University of Karachi; Prof. Dr. Intakhab Ulfat, Head of the Physics Department at the university; and Prof. Dr. Naima Saeed, Chairperson of the Criminology Department.

The committee’s mandate is to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the clash, identify those responsible, and assess any administrative, security, or disciplinary lapses that may have contributed to the incident. It will also recommend appropriate disciplinary, administrative, and legal measures against individuals or groups found culpable.

Furthermore, the panel will propose strategies to prevent such incidents in the future and promote a safe, peaceful academic environment at the university campus.

All relevant authorities and the University of Karachi have been instructed to cooperate fully, providing necessary records and assistance to facilitate the inquiry. The committee is expected to submit its detailed report, including findings and recommendations, within the stipulated 15 days.

Sindh Minister for Universities & Boards, Muhammad Ismail Rahoo, emphasized that the inquiry would review administrative and security shortcomings and ensure legal action against those responsible. He reaffirmed the Sindh government’s commitment to maintaining a secure and law-abiding atmosphere in public universities and stated that violence and unrest would not be tolerated.

This development follows a recent outbreak of violence on the university campus, where supporters of rival student groups clashed using sticks and batons, leading to injuries and heightened security measures, including increased police deployment to restore order.
