SHEIKHUPURA: A man allegedly shot and killed his father during a dispute over money in Sheikhupura, police said on Friday.
The incident occurred in the Nai Abadi Arain Wala area, where the victim, identified as Azam, reportedly asked his son Saim for money.
According to police, an argument broke out between the two before Saim allegedly opened fire on his father.
Azam sustained bullet wounds and died at the scene.
A Division police officials reached the location after being alerted to the incident and took the body into custody. It was later transported to a hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Police said Saim had been arrested and a further investigation was under way.
In a separate case involving the killing of parents, the Supreme Court recently rejected an appeal filed by Taimoor Sattar and maintained his two life sentences.
Justice Hashim Khan Kakar authored the judgment, under which the two life terms will be served consecutively.
The court described the killing of parents inside their home as a grave offence, observing that such crimes have serious implications for the moral and social fabric of society.
According to the judgment, Sattar killed his father and mother with a hammer after they allegedly refused to transfer property in his name.
A trial court had initially sentenced him to death, but the high court later converted the capital punishment into life imprisonment on two counts.
The Supreme Court found no grounds to overturn the high court’s decision. It noted that Sattar’s statement recorded under Section 342 of the Code of Criminal Procedure was consistent with the prosecution’s evidence.
The bench also took into account his 10-day absence following the killings, along with other evidence presented in the case.
Concluding that the evidence established the prosecution’s case, the court dismissed the petition and declined leave to appeal.
In another recent judgment, the Supreme Court converted the death sentence of a man convicted of raping a 10-year-old girl at a school in Sheikhupura into life imprisonment.
Justice Salahuddin Panhwar authored the written verdict, while the court retained a Rs300,000 fine and an additional six-month prison term.
The court also upheld an order under the Anti-Rape Act requiring the convict to pay Rs100,000 in compensation to the child victim.
The judgment emphasised the state’s responsibility to ensure the safety of female students inside educational institutions and while travelling to and from schools.
The court directed provincial police chiefs and the Islamabad police chief to strengthen patrols around educational institutions and take immediate steps to protect girls and women.
Police were further instructed to promptly respond to complaints involving harassment of women and children.
