Severe flooding, landslides leave 450,000 marooned in Bangladesh’s Chittagong

CHITTAGONG: Torrential rainfall and widespread landslides have triggered a humanitarian emergency in Bangladesh’s Chittagong district, where nearly 450,000 people have been stranded by severe flooding.

The worst-hit areas include the upazilas of Satkania, Lohagara, Chandanaish and Banshkhali, where rising floodwaters have submerged homes, farmland, fish farms, schools and major road networks, disrupting daily life and delaying relief efforts.

Thousands of residents remain isolated as floodwaters continue to inundate villages. Many families have lost household belongings, stored crops and livestock feed, while widespread power outages and communication breakdowns have further complicated rescue and assistance operations.

According to the district administration, at least 35 people have lost their lives in flood- and landslide-related incidents. Authorities have established 629 emergency shelters to accommodate displaced residents.

To support relief operations, the Bangladesh Ministry of Relief and Disaster Management has allocated 200 metric tons of rice and Tk10 million. An additional Tk20 million has also been provided from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s special relief fund to assist affected communities.
