Seven killed, 33 injured in KP storm-related incidents; more rain expected

PESHAWAR: Severe weather across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over the past 24 hours has claimed seven lives and left 33 people injured, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

The fatalities included two children, four men, and one woman. The deaths and injuries were reported from Bannu, Shangla, and Mansehra districts, where strong winds, heavy rainfall, and lightning caused widespread damage.

A PDMA assessment revealed that most casualties occurred when the roofs and walls of houses collapsed under the impact of the stormy weather.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted additional rainfall in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir on Sunday. Other parts of the country are expected to experience predominantly hot and dry conditions.

The latest incidents come shortly after similar weather-related accidents earlier this month, when two people lost their lives and 31 others were injured across the province.

In response to the changing weather situation, the PDMA has issued alerts for several districts, including Swat, Upper Dir, Kohistan, and Buner. Authorities have also warned that rising temperatures after June 15 could accelerate snowmelt, increasing the risk of flooding in vulnerable areas.

District administrations have been directed to remain on high alert and ensure precautionary measures are in place. Tourists and travelers have been advised to stay informed about weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel to sensitive regions.

Residents have been urged to stay away from rivers, streams, and other flood-prone locations during periods of heavy rainfall. In emergencies, the public can contact the PDMA helpline at 1700 for assistance.
