Second round of Pak-Afghan talks to be held in Turkey today

ISLAMABAD: The second round of critical negotiations between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban is scheduled to take place today in Turkey. These discussions aim to establish a reliable and verifiable mechanism to address terrorism threats.

Both Pakistan’s Foreign Office Spokesperson, Tahir Andarabi, and Taliban government spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, have confirmed the talks in Istanbul. The primary goal is to curb terrorism originating from Afghan territory to safeguard Pakistan and prevent further loss of life.

Key agenda points include devising a transparent and dependable monitoring framework to combat terrorism. Pakistan has expressed its strong support for developing an effective system to counter these threats.

The initial round, facilitated by Qatar and Turkey, resulted in a ceasefire agreement and a joint commitment by both nations to eradicate terrorism.

During his first weekly briefing, Tahir Andarabi mentioned that Afghan Transit Trade remains suspended pending a security review. He highlighted that the ceasefire agreed upon in Doha earlier in the week has largely held, with no significant terrorist activities originating from Afghanistan in recent days. This outcome suggests the effectiveness of the earlier discussions.

Andarabi expressed optimism for the continuation of this positive momentum during the Istanbul talks and in future meetings.
