ISLAMABAD: Adviser to Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah has said the federal government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are holding informal, “off-the-record” discussions ahead of the party’s planned march on Islamabad on October 4.
The PTI had shifted its planned September 27 protest to October 4. The party says the demonstration is intended to press for the release of its founder Imran Khan and the restoration of what it calls constitutional supremacy.
Sanaullah said the government had completed preparations to deal with the planned march and would prevent participants from entering Islamabad if the PTI leadership decided to proceed with the protest.
He questioned the legality of a provincial government organising a march towards the federal capital, saying such an action would run contrary to constitutional and legal provisions.
Discussing the possibility of governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the PML-N leader said the option was still being considered. He clarified, however, that any decision would have to follow the constitutional procedure and receive parliamentary approval.
Sanaullah also commented on PTI’s decision-making process, claiming that individuals active on social media were playing an increasingly influential role in determining the party’s political course.
Turning to the PML-N, he said party president Nawaz Sharif continued to guide its affairs and that his opinion was sought on key political decisions.
He added that issues concerning the provinces were matters for parliament to decide, while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would outline the government’s stance if the issue was formally brought before the House.
“The prime minister will give his position when the matter comes before parliament,” Sanaullah said, adding that Nawaz Sharif would also convey his views at the relevant forum.
