MOSCOW: Russia has officially recognized the Afghan Taliban government, making it the first country to accept their government after their return to power.
According to a British news agency, Russia has accepted the credentials of Afghanistan’s new ambassador. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the formal recognition of the Taliban government will promote bilateral cooperation across various sectors.
It is noteworthy that on August 15, 2021, following the withdrawal of U.S. forces, the Taliban regained control of the Afghan capital, Kabul.
After 20 years of war, the U.S. exit from Afghanistan in August 2021 led Russia to gradually restore its relations with Afghanistan. Two years ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that his country considers the Taliban as an ally in the fight against terrorism.
Experts believe that, given the security threats posed by militant groups across the Middle East and beyond, Russia wants to work with the Taliban.
This year in April, Russia removed the Afghan Taliban from its list of terrorist organizations; previously, in 2003, Russia officially designated the Taliban as a terrorist organization.
