KARACHI: The country’s official moon-sighting body is set to meet on Saturday to determine the beginning of Zilhaj, a decision that will also confirm the date for Eidul Azha across Pakistan.
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will gather on 29 Ziqadah to examine crescent sighting reports received from different parts of the country. Following verification of testimonies, authorities will announce the start of the new Islamic month and the schedule for Eidul Azha celebrations.
According to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the meeting will take place at the Pakistan Meteorological Department headquarters in Karachi under the chairmanship of Maulana Syed Muhammad Abdul Khabir Azad.
At the same time, zonal and district moon-sighting committees will hold parallel meetings in their respective regions to collect and review local reports before forwarding them to the central body for final consideration.
After completing the review process, Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad is expected to officially declare whether the Zilhaj moon has been sighted.
Ahead of the meeting, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) issued a forecast indicating a strong likelihood of crescent visibility on Saturday evening.
If the prediction matches actual sightings, Eidul Azha in Pakistan is expected to be observed on May 27. However, the final announcement will depend on the decision of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee after assessing evidence from across the country
