LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved a 10-day Basant festival across the province, with celebrations scheduled to begin on January 29, 2027.
The chief minister directed the relevant authorities to arrange the festivities as a New Year gift for the people of Punjab to welcome 2027.
Under the approved schedule, Basant celebrations will continue until February 7, with a one-day break on February 5 in observance of Kashmir Solidarity Day.
The festival returned to Punjab last year after a gap of 25 years.
Meanwhile, the Lahore administration has stepped up preparations for Basant 2027 and urged citizens to follow all prescribed safety measures to prevent accidents and ensure orderly celebrations.
The district administration has also prohibited courier companies and transport operators from carrying kite-flying materials into Lahore.
According to a notification issued by the Lahore deputy commissioner, transporters and drivers found bringing prohibited kite-flying materials from other districts or provinces could face legal action. Penalties include registration of criminal cases, suspension of driving licences and confiscation of the material.
Police and district administration teams are conducting continuous inspections at major entry points, including Ravi, Thokar, Shahdara, Babu Sabu and Saggian, to stop the transportation of illegal kite-flying materials into the city.
Citizens have been asked to report suspected cases of illegal transportation or supply of kite-flying materials to the Deputy Commissioner’s control room at 0307-0002345.
