Punjab plans AI-Powered scanner to detect multiple diseases in minutes

LAHORE: Punjab is set to explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical screening after Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif gave in-principle approval for the introduction of an AI-powered multi-disease scanner across the province.

The proposed technology was presented to the chief minister during a meeting with senior representatives of Chinese technology giant Alibaba, where officials briefed her on the system’s potential applications in healthcare.

According to the briefing, the AI-based Multi-Disease Screening Solution uses non-contrast CT scans and can potentially identify signs of up to 10 diseases within around two minutes.

The system is designed to assist healthcare professionals with screening, diagnosis, treatment planning and disease management, with a particular focus on the early identification of several life-threatening cancers.

The technology can support the detection of pancreatic and liver cancers and screening for gastric, pancreatic, oesophageal, colorectal and liver cancers. It can also help identify Acute Aortic Syndrome and assess cardiovascular disease risks.

In addition, the AI system can analyse fat and muscle health, assist in assessing osteoporosis and help detect fatty liver disease, potentially enabling earlier intervention and improved disease management.

The technology is intended to work alongside existing medical diagnostic procedures rather than replace conventional methods. Doctors would use AI-generated assessments as an additional tool to support faster and more comprehensive evaluations.

Maryam Nawaz expressed strong interest in the technology and directed the relevant provincial health authorities to prepare a pilot project for its implementation in Punjab.

The proposed pilot will help authorities assess the system’s effectiveness and determine its potential for wider use in the province’s healthcare facilities.
