LAHORE: The Punjab government has approved the establishment of the Kulsoom Nawaz Cancer Hospital in Dera Ghazi Khan at an estimated cost of over Rs8.7 billion, with the project scheduled for completion by June 30, 2029.
According to official documents, the initiative aims to strengthen specialised healthcare services and improve access to cancer diagnosis and treatment for residents of Dera Ghazi Khan and nearby districts.
The project carries a capital expenditure component of more than Rs3.12 billion, while over Rs5.58 billion has been allocated for revenue-related expenses.
Once operational, the hospital is expected to provide modern treatment facilities for cancer patients, helping reduce the need to travel to major cities for specialised medical care.
The provincial government is also pursuing other initiatives to expand cancer treatment services across Punjab. Secretary Health Azmat Mahmood said work was underway on the Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cancer Treatment and Research in Lahore.
In a separate development, the Punjab Health Department has decided to introduce a transparent and merit-based mechanism for house jobs and postgraduate training for foreign medical graduates.
The department has formed a nine-member committee comprising vice-chancellors of medical universities across Punjab and principals of medical colleges to review the existing induction procedures.
The committee will assess the current framework to ensure uniformity, transparency and merit in the selection process. It will also examine procedures for verifying medical degrees, professional registration, licences and eligibility requirements for foreign medical graduates.
The measures are aimed at improving the fairness and consistency of medical training placements across the province.
