President Zardari terms Islamabad MoU a landmark achievement for regional peace

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has praised the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, describing it as a milestone that could reshape the future of the region and strengthen global stability.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the president said the conflict that erupted in February 2026 had inflicted heavy human and economic costs, disrupting international energy markets, trade routes and overall economic activity. He expressed optimism that diplomacy had prevailed and urged regional countries to prioritize cooperation, development and the well-being of their citizens.

President Zardari commended Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for their sustained diplomatic engagement, saying their efforts played a key role in facilitating the agreement.

He noted that Pakistan had consistently adopted a balanced and responsible approach throughout the crisis by advocating dialogue, restraint and peaceful negotiations while maintaining communication with all stakeholders.

The president also acknowledged the contributions of US President Donald Trump, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for choosing diplomacy over confrontation and helping advance the peace process.

He further appreciated the constructive role of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Egypt, Russia and China, whose support and encouragement of negotiations helped create conditions for a peaceful settlement.

Calling for the complete implementation of the Islamabad MoU, President Zardari urged all sides to move swiftly toward a final agreement within the agreed timeframe to secure lasting regional peace.

“True heroes are those who end wars, not those who seek to ignite them,” he said.

The president expressed confidence that the Islamabad MoU would become the foundation of long-term peace, enhanced economic cooperation and stronger energy partnerships, allowing countries to focus on prosperity instead of conflict.

“War leaves behind only devastation and suffering, while peace opens the door to progress. Pakistan will continue to stand with its brotherly nations in promoting stability, cooperation and shared prosperity,” he added.
