President Zardari reaffirms commitment to press freedom on world press freedom day

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has reiterated Pakistan’s strong commitment to media freedom, describing it as both a constitutional right and a cornerstone of democracy.

In his message marking World Press Freedom Day, the president extended greetings to journalists and media professionals worldwide, emphasizing that truth and transparency are essential for building lasting peace. He noted that the global theme highlights the critical role of responsible journalism in shaping a stable future.

Zardari pointed out that the media faces growing challenges, including the spread of misinformation and disinformation, as well as risks associated with emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. He observed that journalists across the world continue to encounter pressure, intimidation, and even physical threats while performing their duties.

He also raised concerns about the role of powerful digital platforms, stating that social media and large tech companies can influence public opinion through algorithm-driven content, sometimes at the expense of factual reporting and balanced discourse.

Referring to Pakistan’s constitutional framework, the president highlighted Article 19 of the Constitution of Pakistan, which guarantees freedom of expression with reasonable restrictions, as well as Article 19-A, which ensures citizens’ right to access information. He stressed that a free and diverse media strengthens, rather than weakens, a confident nation.

At the same time, he underlined the importance of responsible journalism, urging media professionals to prioritize accuracy, fairness, and credibility to maintain public trust.

Addressing recent challenges, Zardari warned of coordinated misinformation campaigns targeting Pakistan, aimed at creating division. He noted that during recent tensions, including Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos, the nation and its media stood united, countering false narratives with factual reporting.

The president paid tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in pursuit of truth and called on authorities to ensure a safe and supportive environment for media workers. He also urged media organizations to uphold ethical standards and encouraged citizens to support credible journalism.

He expressed confidence that Pakistan can build a resilient and trustworthy information environment, essential for democratic strength, stability, and its global standing.
