ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has decided to take up concerns over the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections and the demand for new provinces in Parliament, party sources said on Monday.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is expected to address the National Assembly within the next two days, where he will outline the party’s reservations about the AJK electoral process and allegations of irregularities.
Sources said Bilawal is also likely to brief lawmakers on the PPP’s discussions with the federal government regarding the political situation emerging from the AJK elections.
PPP lawmakers are expected to raise the issue of new provinces on the floor of the House and may stage a protest over the matter. The party has maintained that any decision to create new administrative units should be based on the aspirations and consent of the people concerned.
Meanwhile, the PPP has reportedly prepared legal proceedings challenging the proposed formation of the next government in AJK.
According to party sources, the PPP’s legal team has drafted a petition seeking to prevent the PML-N from forming the government until the composition of the AJK Legislative Assembly is completed.
The petition, approved by the party leadership, is expected to be filed before the Azad Kashmir High Court within 48 hours. The PPP plans to seek a restraining order against government formation until all constitutional and electoral formalities concerning the Assembly are completed.
