GILGIT: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has secured the highest number of seats in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections, paving the way for a possible coalition government with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), according to political sources.
Unofficial and preliminary results indicate that the PPP won 10 out of 24 constituencies, claiming victories in GBA-1, GBA-4, GBA-5, GBA-7, GBA-9, GBA-10, GBA-11, GBA-12, GBA-17, and GBA-19.
The PML-N secured four seats, winning in GBA-2, GBA-18, GBA-20, and GBA-22, while
independent candidates captured seven constituencies — GBA-3, GBA-6, GBA-15, GBA-16, GBA-21, GBA-23, and GBA-24.
The Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) managed to win one seat, GBA-8, according to the unofficial tally.
As no political party has obtained a simple majority in the 24-member assembly, discussions are reportedly underway for a PPP-PML-N alliance to form the next regional government.
Sources familiar with the negotiations said the chief minister’s office is expected to go to the PPP, while the governor’s position may be allocated to the PML-N as part of a power-sharing arrangement. Final decisions, however, are expected after consultations between the leadership of both parties.
