PPP leads GB polls, Bilawal set to form GB govt

G.BALTISTAN: Gilgit-Baltistan’s 2026 general elections have produced a fragmented mandate, with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) securing the highest number of seats but falling short of an outright majority.

Based on unofficial and unconfirmed results, the PPP won 10 seats in the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly, positioning itself as the largest political force in the region.

Following the results, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari announced that his party would seek to form the next government. In a message posted on social media, he thanked voters for their confidence and congratulated party supporters on the electoral success.

According to preliminary figures, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) secured six seats, while candidates backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) won two seats. Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) managed to capture one seat. Independent candidates performed strongly, winning five constituencies and placing themselves in a potentially decisive position during coalition negotiations.

Political observers believe the support of independents will be crucial in determining who ultimately forms the government, as no party has achieved a clear majority on its own.
