ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has agreed to support government legislation that it considers to be in the national interest, while retaining the freedom to oppose bills it does not endorse.
Sources said the understanding was reached during high-level discussions between the PPP and the PML-N-led government, with parliamentary affairs also coming under discussion at a meeting held at the President’s House.
During the meeting, the PPP made it clear that its support would not extend automatically to every bill introduced by the government, according to sources.
The prime minister sought the president’s cooperation on parliamentary matters, while the government assured the PPP that the party would be consulted on proposed legislation in both the National Assembly and Senate.
The government also agreed to provide the PPP with advance information about upcoming legislation and share draft bills with the party before they are presented in Parliament, sources said.
PPP’s relevant parliamentary committees will examine the proposed bills and convey their recommendations to the government.
The sources said the PPP had agreed to provide unconditional backing to legislation that serves the national interest. However, the party would remain free to withhold support from other government-sponsored bills.
The government also assured the PPP that ministers would be present in both houses during legislative proceedings to facilitate parliamentary business.
PPP sources said ensuring the required quorum in the National Assembly and Senate would be the government’s responsibility.
