Positive update for Pakistanis seeking new gas connections

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani government is expected to lift the ban on issuing new domestic LNG connections by September, contingent upon an improvement in supply following the anticipated resumption of LNG imports from Qatar.

Sources indicated that the restriction, which was put in place in May due to limited supply, may be lifted once Qatar’s force majeure on LNG shipments concludes in August, leading to better availability of liquefied natural gas in Pakistan.

They further explained that LNG supplies are projected to rise starting September, and a reduction in demand from the power sector is also expected, which should ease the strain on the country’s gas infrastructure.

Nevertheless, officials clarified that a final decision on restarting new domestic LNG connections will be made after a thorough review of the overall gas supply situation in September.

Qatar had declared force majeure on LNG exports until August this year, prompting the government to suspend new domestic LNG connection approvals in May. The Ministry of Petroleum issued a formal notification, prompting Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) to halt issuing new demand notices.

The suspension covers all new domestic LNG connection requests, including applications submitted under both urgent and standard categories.
