Police halt alleged child marriage in Naushahro Feroze, detain Nikah registrar,  relatives

NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: Police disrupted the alleged forced marriage of an underage girl in Kore-Ja-Bhan village of Naushahro Feroze district, detaining several people, including the Nikah registrar and members of the bride’s family.

The action was taken after police received information about a child marriage ceremony taking place at a house in the village. According to officials, numerous guests attending the event were taken into custody during the raid.

The prospective groom, identified as Abdul Ghafoor Solangi, managed to flee before police arrived. Authorities said raids are underway to apprehend him.

Police alleged that the Nikah ceremony of the minor girl was being conducted against her will when officers intervened and stopped the proceedings.

The incident comes months after a similar operation in Dadu, where police prevented the marriage of a 12-year-old girl within the limits of A-Section Police Station. During that raid, officers took the girl into protective custody and arrested the groom, Raja Panhwar, along with his father, Niaz Panhwar.

Police registered a case under the Child Marriage Act against the groom, the Nikah registrar, and the parents of both the bride and groom.

Although child marriage is prohibited under Pakistani law, the practice continues to be reported in several parts of the country, with rights groups frequently raising concerns over the high number of girls married before reaching the age of 18.
