PM Shehbaz to join historic US-Iran peace deal signing in Geneva

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will travel to Geneva later this week to participate in the signing ceremony of a landmark agreement between Iran and the United States, official sources have confirmed. A senior Pakistani delegation is expected to accompany him during the visit.

The ceremony, scheduled for Friday, will mark the signing of an initial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Washington and Tehran. The agreement is expected to open the door for a 60-day negotiation process focused on Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief, and other outstanding issues.

Media reports indicate that the preliminary accord includes an immediate halt to military activities across all fronts and the restoration of maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies. However, some members of the US Congress have expressed concerns that differing interpretations of the agreement could create challenges during its implementation.

US President Donald Trump welcomed the development, describing the accord as a completed deal between the two countries. He announced that restrictions on Iranian ports had been lifted and called for the resumption of international shipping operations.

Trump also stated that oil transport routes would return to normal following Friday’s ceasefire signing and said efforts would be undertaken to remove naval mines from the Strait of Hormuz to ensure safe passage for commercial vessels.
