PM Shehbaz, Sindh CM agree to maintain political harmony amid tensions

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah have agreed to continue political consultation and promote harmony on issues of national significance, the Prime Minister’s Office said on Monday.

Murad Ali Shah met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad, with discussions covering the political situation, matters concerning Sindh, ongoing development initiatives and other issues of mutual interest.

The meeting was attended by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah, Information Technology Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema and Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik.

The meeting took place against the backdrop of increasing differences between the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and its coalition partner, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), particularly over the recent Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections.

The PML-N emerged as the leading party in the AJK polls, while the PPP has alleged that the elections were affected by rigging and other irregularities.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari had earlier announced that his party would suspend support for the PML-N-led federal government until its grievances, including those related to the AJK elections, were addressed.

Speaking to reporters at Parliament House last week, Bilawal questioned the transparency of the AJK elections and alleged that the PPP had lost several constituencies because of rigging.

He said the party had raised concerns before polling and sought adequate security arrangements to ensure a fair electoral process.

Bilawal also alleged that the PPP administration in Poonch had been removed through electoral manipulation. He criticised the decision to conduct the AJK elections in phases, arguing that the electoral process remained incomplete.

“If the PML-N wanted such a controversial election, then congratulations to them,” Bilawal remarked.
