Iran has launched nationwide funeral ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with large public gatherings planned in Tehran, followed by processions in Qom and Mashhad, as well as commemorative events in Iraq.
According to Iranian state media, authorities expect the funeral processions to attract millions of mourners, presenting them as a demonstration of national unity following the conflict in which Khamenei was killed.
Khamenei’s death, followed by the appointment of his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as Iran’s new supreme leader, marks a significant turning point in the Islamic Republic’s history. Iranian reports say Mojtaba Khamenei was seriously wounded in the strike that killed his father and has not appeared publicly since the conflict began.
