PM directs to ease digital transactions to promote cashless economy

Islamabad:Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has directed to make digital transactions cheaper and easier for the people to promote cashless economy in the country.

Chairing a meeting in Islamabad on Monday, he directed for constituting three committees including Digital Payments Innovation and Adoption Committee, Digital Public Infrastructure Committee and Government Payments Committee.

These committees will submit recommendations for facilitating payments and transactions between the public and businesses, and between the government and private sector, create awareness about the digital system, activate the Pakistan Digital Authority and will prepare a national digital master plan.

The Prime Minister also directed to establish the Raast Digital Payment System at federal and provincial levels.

He said establishing a digital transaction system is significant to ensure transparency in the economy.

The Prime Minister also issued directives for making transactions between the public and private sectors cashless.

The meeting was briefed about progress on establishing a cashless payments system in the country. It was informed that currently, 40 million users are benefiting from the Raast system, and steps are being taken to increase this number.

All financial transactions of the federal government are being done through the Raast system and this system is also being implemented in the provinces.

The meeting was apprised that under the Smart Islamabad Pilot Project, the Ministry of Information Technology is taking steps to make Islamabad the first cashless city of Pakistan.
