PHC seeks KP govt response on plea for deputy chief minister

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has sought a response from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on a petition calling for the appointment of a Deputy Chief Minister or Additional Chief Minister in the province.

The petition was filed by Advocate Saifullah Muhib Kakakhel, who argued that an alternative constitutional arrangement was needed to ensure the smooth functioning of the provincial government.

According to the petitioner, Chief Minister Sohail Afridi is frequently engaged in protests, long marches and other political activities, which, he claimed, could affect the administration of the province.

The petitioner maintained that the provincial government must remain focused on routine administrative matters and the delivery of essential public services.

He argued that appointing a Deputy or Additional Chief Minister would help ensure continuity in governance and prevent disruption to day-to-day affairs.

The petition further called for an effective arrangement in accordance with the Constitution and relevant laws to oversee provincial matters when the chief minister is occupied with political activities.

The high court has sought the KP government’s response on the plea and will proceed with the matter after receiving its reply.
