ISLAMABAD: Federal ministers have said eligible consumers will be able to purchase petrol at a price lower than the subsidised rates offered during the recent US-Iran conflict under the Prime Minister’s Fuel Relief Package.
The government has allocated Rs130 billion for the initiative, aimed at easing the burden of higher fuel prices on low- and middle-income households.
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said the government was closely monitoring developments in the region and taking measures to minimise their impact on the public.
He termed the fuel relief programme an initial step towards providing assistance to vulnerable segments of society, saying eligible consumers would receive petrol at a rate below the subsidy prices provided during the US-Iran war.
Information Technology Minister Shaza Fatima said eligible citizens could register for the scheme by sending their name, CNIC number, vehicle registration number and province to 9771.
Following registration, applicants can send a message to the same number to receive a token for availing the subsidy, she said.
Under the package, motorcycle owners will be entitled to discounted petrol for up to 20 litres per month, while owners of small cars can receive the benefit on up to 30 litres.
The vehicle must be registered in the applicant’s own name to qualify for the relief, according to the ministers.
Information Minister Atta Tarar said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched the initiative after taking notice of the financial difficulties being faced by citizens because of higher fuel costs.
He said motorcycles, rickshaws and vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc would receive a Rs100-per-litre reduction under the scheme.
Tarar described the initiative as a first-of-its-kind mechanism designed to provide direct fuel-price relief to eligible consumers.
The government said the package would offer targeted assistance to deserving citizens while authorities continue efforts to contain the effects of regional tensions and fluctuations in international oil prices.
