PCB unveils major reforms to central player contracts

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has introduced comprehensive reforms to its central contract system for cricketers.

Under the new framework, players will be classified into different tiers based on the format and their specialization. Specifically, those involved in Test and ODI formats will be placed in Tiers A and B.

The PCB clarified that Tier A will primarily feature players with expertise in red-ball cricket, while Tier B and C will include participants in ODIs and T20 matches. Furthermore, Tier C will be dedicated exclusively to T20 specialists, and Tier D will focus on promising talent from development squads and cricket academies.

A key highlight of the new policy is the emphasis on performance, with 85% of players’ remuneration linked directly to their on-field achievements, stated PCB Chairman Mohsin Khan.

In a recent briefing, Khan explained that the incorporation of detailed data into domestic cricket assessments is part of the broader strategy to ensure contracts are merit-based.

He remarked, “We are committed to providing all necessary resources for cricket’s growth. While bilateral series are yielding good results, there’s room for improvement in tournaments, and we are actively working on that. Positive changes are on the horizon.”

Khan also stressed the need for transparency in fitness assessments, advocating for fitness tests to be conducted openly before the media.

He underscored the importance of domestic cricket participation, warning that players who fail to engage regularly will face repercussions.

The PCB has meticulously documented every aspect of the new contract system to maintain clarity and accountability.

Feedback from players has been largely positive, with many expressing clarity on the new policies after thorough briefings.

Khan concluded by reaffirming the PCB’s commitment to recognizing the significance of all cricket formats and developing a modernized model that aligns with the evolving landscape of international cricket.
