MAKKAH: Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye have signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, committing the three nations to collectively respond to any armed aggression against a member state, the Foreign Office (FO) announced on Friday.
The agreement was concluded during the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Summit for Joint Defence, attended by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
In a statement, the Foreign Office said the pact underscores the three countries’ resolve to deepen strategic defence cooperation and reinforce regional peace and stability.
Under the agreement, an armed attack on any one of the signatory states will be considered an attack on all three, strengthening their collective deterrence against external aggression. The accord also outlines expanded collaboration in defence, security coordination, and military cooperation.
The development comes amid heightened regional tensions following the US-Israel conflict with Iran, which has disrupted security across the Middle East and affected maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has repeatedly warned regional countries against facilitating attacks launched from their territory and has targeted locations hosting US military bases.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and senior members of the Pakistani delegation held separate talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at Qasr Al-Safa in Makkah, where both sides discussed bilateral relations and regional developments.
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia had previously signed a bilateral mutual defence agreement last year, pledging to treat any attack on either country as an attack on both. More recently, Pakistan reaffirmed its full support for Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and security following Houthi attacks on the Kingdom.
The newly signed trilateral agreement marks a significant step toward institutionalising defence cooperation among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye amid evolving regional security challenges.
