ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is actively pursuing diplomatic efforts to encourage the United States and Iran to return to the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), viewing it as a key mechanism for reducing regional tensions and restarting meaningful dialogue, the Foreign Office (FO) said on Thursday.
During the weekly press briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Ambassador Tahir Andrabi acknowledged that although recent days have seen a temporary reduction in hostilities, the overall security environment remains uncertain and fragile.
He noted that the recent calm had created optimism that a lasting ceasefire could emerge and eventually lead to renewed negotiations, but cautioned that the situation continues to demand close attention.
Andrabi stressed that diplomacy remains the only sustainable solution to the ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran. He said Pakistan will continue engaging with all relevant stakeholders to preserve the current pause in hostilities and help create conditions conducive to dialogue.
According to the spokesperson, diplomatic contacts aimed at stabilising the situation, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, are ongoing, with a focus on reducing tensions and restoring normalcy.
He added that Islamabad is working diligently to persuade both sides to return to the Islamabad MoU, allowing outstanding disputes to be addressed in accordance with the agreement and the Pakistan-Qatar Joint Statement issued on June 22.
Pakistan also urged all parties to show restraint and fulfil their commitments to resume technical-level discussions necessary for implementing the provisions of the MoU.
Highlighting Pakistan’s broader diplomatic outreach, Andrabi recalled Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent telephone conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. During the exchange, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting regional peace, stability, and the uninterrupted movement of legitimate maritime trade through the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.
The spokesperson also referred to Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar’s June 28 discussion with Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi. The two officials reviewed the deteriorating humanitarian and security situation in Palestine, condemned Israeli actions, called for stronger diplomatic coordination, and reiterated their shared commitment to regional stability.
The Foreign Office statement comes amid renewed confrontation between the United States and Iran.
On Thursday, the US military announced that it had carried out what it described as a large-scale series of airstrikes against targets in Iran, saying the operation was conducted in response to alleged Iranian attacks on American military installations in Jordan. The strikes marked a major escalation after several days of relative calm.
Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency reported explosions in multiple locations across Khuzestan province, including areas near Abadan, Shadegan, Arvandkenar and Ahvaz, as well as on Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf.
Meanwhile, the conflict appeared to expand further after Saudi Arabia and the United States announced on Wednesday that they had targeted militant positions in Iraq.
