ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s armed forces have destroyed several Afghan Taliban checkposts in a retaliatory operation following cross-border firing that killed one person and injured five members of the same family in South Waziristan’s Angoor Adda area, security sources said.
According to Lower South Waziristan Deputy Commissioner, Afghan Taliban forces opened fire on Angoor Adda Bazaar and adjoining residential areas without provocation, resulting in civilian casualties.
Security sources said Pakistani troops responded swiftly, targeting and destroying multiple Afghan Taliban positions across the border. They added that the military response was ongoing and forces remained prepared to repel any further aggression.
The latest incident adds to a series of cross-border clashes in the Angoor Adda sector. In late April, mortar shelling from across the border injured civilians and damaged houses in South Waziristan, prompting Pakistani forces to target Afghan Taliban positions, according to reports by Geo.tv citing security sources and local authorities.
The latest violence follows renewed hostilities in February, when Pakistan launched Operation Ghazab lil-Haq.
Islamabad has repeatedly urged the Afghan Taliban authorities to prevent militant groups from using Afghan territory to carry out attacks inside Pakistan. Kabul, however, has denied allowing its territory to be used for attacks against other countries.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi strongly condemned what he described as “unprovoked and blatant aggression” by the Afghan Taliban regime against civilians in South Waziristan.
In a post on X, Kundi warned that Pakistan would not tolerate attacks on its citizens or violations of its sovereignty.
The governor highlighted the sacrifices made by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the fight against terrorism, noting that thousands of lives had been lost in efforts to maintain peace and security.
He said the government would not allow any force to threaten the public or undermine the country’s security.
Kundi further expressed confidence in the armed forces’ ability to defend the country, saying they had the full support of the nation in protecting every inch of Pakistani territory.
