Pakistan denounces Houthi attack on Madinah power facility

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has strongly denounced an alleged Houthi drone attack on the Taibah power distribution station in Madinah, expressing deep concern over the targeting of civilian infrastructure serving the Prophet’s (PBUH) Mosque.

Foreign Office Spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan, in a statement, described the attack as a serious provocation, stressing that the facility provides electricity to one of Islam’s holiest sites.

He said the sanctity of the Two Holy Mosques and the security of pilgrims and worshippers must be protected and respected under all circumstances.

The spokesperson called for an immediate and unconditional halt to what he termed reckless actions, warning that such incidents pose a serious risk to regional peace and stability.

Sajjad Haider Khan reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia and reiterated Islamabad’s support for the Kingdom’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and security.

He said Pakistan stands alongside Saudi Arabia in its efforts to protect the Two Holy Mosques, safeguard its people and ensure the safety of pilgrims and visitors.

The spokesperson also reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at achieving sustainable peace and stability across the region.

Meanwhile, the Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthi movement said an attack on the Madinah power distribution facility earlier this week had damaged a transformer, although electricity supplies remained unaffected.

According to the coalition, an investigation and analysis of debris recovered from the drone indicated Houthi involvement in Tuesday’s attack. It said the targeted station supplies power to the Prophet’s Mosque.

The Houthis have not immediately commented on the coalition’s allegation.

The incident comes about two weeks after Saudi authorities said they intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone south of Mecca before it could enter the city’s restricted airspace.

The coalition described that incident as the second alleged Houthi attempt to target Mecca since 2017, while the Houthis denied targeting the holy city or any Islamic sacred site.
