WEB DESK: Algerian boxer Imane Khelif will be required to undergo genetic sex testing to participate in upcoming World Boxing bouts.
Algerian boxing star Imane Khelif, who clinched the women’s welterweight gold at the Paris Olympics last year, has become a focal point of controversy. At 26, Khelif’s eligibility to compete in women’s categories has come under scrutiny after her victory prompted questions about her gender status.
According to World Boxing, Khelif will be barred from competing in female categories at upcoming events, including the Eindhoven Box Cup, until she undergoes genetic sex testing in line with the organization’s procedures. The governing body stated:
“Imane Khelif may not participate in the female category at any World Boxing event until she completes genetic sex screening in accordance with our rules and testing protocols.”
The organization clarified that it has informed the Algerian Boxing Federation of this decision. Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) permitted Khelif to compete at the Olympics despite her disqualification from the 2023 World Championships by the International Boxing Association (AIBA), which deemed her ineligible to fight as a woman based on previous tests.
Looking ahead, World Boxing plans to implement mandatory genetic sex testing for all athletes ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, citing the need to uphold fairness and integrity in the sport.
