NCCIA dismantles illegal network trading mobile users’ sensitive data

ISLAMABAD: A joint operation by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has led to the exposure of an alleged network involved in the illegal sale of telecom users’ confidential information in Lahore.

The raid was launched after the PTA filed a complaint, resulting in the arrest of three suspects. During the operation, officials seized five mobile phones, eight biometric verification devices, 43 suspected SIM cards, and multiple digital storage items containing sensitive information.

According to the PTA, preliminary findings indicate that the accused were using WhatsApp to buy and sell confidential telecom data. The material allegedly included call detail records (CDRs), IMEI numbers, subscriber profiles, and users’ location information.

Investigators also recovered records containing citizens’ biometric data, fingerprints, Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) details, and documents linked to financial transactions.

Authorities have registered a criminal case against the arrested individuals and are working to identify other members believed to be connected to the operation. Forensic examination of the seized devices is ongoing to uncover additional evidence.

The PTA reiterated its commitment to safeguarding citizens’ personal information and stated that strict legal action will continue against individuals involved in the unlawful trade of sensitive data.

The development follows concerns raised last year when PTA Chairman Major General (Retd.) Hafeez-ur-Rehman informed the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication that personal data of Pakistani citizens had been found circulating on the dark web.

During the committee meeting, chaired by Senator Palwasha Mohammad Zai Khan, the PTA chief confirmed that an investigation had verified reports of leaked data. The compromised information reportedly included CNIC copies, travel records, and mobile SIM registration details, underscoring growing concerns over data security in the country.
