Nawaz Sharif urges maximum public relief despite petrol price hike

LAHORE: Nawaz Sharif on Saturday stressed the need for public relief measures following the latest rise in fuel prices during a high-level meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Lahore.

The meeting took place at Jati Umra and was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar along with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

According to sources, participants reviewed the country’s political and economic conditions, while Ishaq Dar explained the factors behind the recent increase in petroleum prices. Nawaz Sharif emphasized that immediate steps should be taken to ease the burden on ordinary citizens, particularly low-income families affected by inflation.

He also called for coordinated policies between the federal and Punjab governments to address public concerns and minimize economic hardship.

The discussion reportedly included political planning for upcoming elections in Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, as well as updates on Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement concerning ongoing US-Iran negotiations.

Earlier this week, the federal government announced another increase in fuel prices. Petrol prices rose by Rs14.92 per litre to Rs414.78, while high-speed diesel increased by Rs15 per litre, reaching Rs414.58 per litre. Officials said the adjustment was linked to fluctuations in international oil markets amid tensions involving Iran.
