Nawaz Sharif leads PML-N huddle to finalise AJK govt setup

MURREE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif is presiding over a key party consultation in Murree to finalise the formation of the next government in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, party sources said on Sunday.

The meeting is focused on selecting the AJK prime minister and finalising candidates for reserved seats, including seats allocated to women and overseas Kashmiris.

Shah Ghulam Qadir is reportedly among the leading contenders for the AJK premiership, while the names of Tariq Farooq and Waqar Noor are also being considered.

For the women’s reserved seats, party discussions are said to include Seharish Qamar, Maryam Kashmiri, Nasira Khan and Nisara Abbasi. Ahsan Danish, Abdul Rehman Arain, Raja Wasim and Raja Javed are reportedly in the running for the overseas Kashmiris’ seat.

Earlier, Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said the PML-N had won 24 general seats in the AJK elections.

He said the party was expected to gain three women’s seats along with three additional reserved seats, taking its overall strength in the Legislative Assembly to 30.

The reserved category includes seats for overseas Kashmiris, technocrats, and Ulema and Mashaikh.

Chaudhry said the AJK Assembly would meet next week for the oath-taking of newly elected members, followed by elections for the reserved seats, speaker and prime minister.

He stressed the need for a stable government in AJK to address the challenges facing the region and ensure effective governance.
