PESHAWAR: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has said the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) governments have reached a common understanding on combating terrorism, expressing optimism that joint efforts would help improve the security situation in the province.
Addressing an Apex Committee meeting in Peshawar alongside KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, Naqvi described the development as a significant step towards strengthening cooperation between the two governments.
“For the first time, I can proudly say that the federal and provincial governments are on the same page,” he said, expressing hope that closer coordination would deliver tangible results in the fight against terrorism.
The minister acknowledged the difficult circumstances faced by those engaged in counterterrorism efforts. Recalling the challenges surrounding funerals of terrorism victims, he said federal representatives had travelled from Islamabad to attend such events and show solidarity with the affected families.
Naqvi stressed that while the federal government would continue fulfilling its responsibilities, the provincial government must take the lead in confronting terrorism. He said sustainable progress would require a coordinated strategy, with local authorities playing a central role.
He alleged that although the KP government had voiced opposition to terrorism, it had not condemned it consistently. He assured the provincial administration that the federal government would extend assistance wherever required.
“The federal government will fulfil its responsibilities. Wherever you need us, we will stand with you,” Naqvi said, reaffirming support for security personnel and law enforcement agencies.
Urging officials to remain determined despite the challenges, the interior minister said the country could overcome terrorism through unity and collective action.
He also advocated reviving the five-district plan, saying that strengthening police operations through a grouping of five districts could improve their effectiveness and operational capabilities.
Naqvi said restoring peace and protecting citizens from terrorism remained the public’s foremost expectation, adding that the government must take effective measures to meet these demands.
Referring to recent political developments, he alleged that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had anticipated that road blockades would trigger unrest across the province. He praised law enforcement agencies for managing the situation peacefully.
The minister also highlighted the growing challenge of distinguishing genuine videos from fabricated digital content, warning of the difficulties posed by misleading material circulating online.
Naqvi expressed confidence that stronger coordination between the federal and provincial governments would help put Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on a path towards greater security, stability and development.
