KARACHI: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Karachi has sealed several residential and commercial properties as part of its investigation into alleged corruption in the Lyari Expressway Resettlement Project.
Working alongside district administration officials, the NAB team carried out an operation at a housing scheme, sealing 20 bungalows as well as a number of under-construction commercial plazas built on plots designated for public amenities.
According to NAB officials, individuals associated with the resettlement project, allegedly in collaboration with others, created fraudulent plot records and sold the properties to unsuspecting buyers, generating substantial illegal profits.
Investigators further claimed that money obtained through the alleged scam was used to purchase 25 acres of land in Thatta, where authorities believe the illicit funds were being invested and converted into legitimate assets through a housing development.
NAB said the disputed plots had originally been allocated to families affected by the Lyari Expressway project, while land reserved for welfare and public-use purposes was allegedly transferred and sold unlawfully to private individuals.
The Lyari Expressway Resettlement Project was introduced to provide housing and rehabilitation for residents displaced during the construction of the Lyari Expressway. The accountability watchdog said the investigation into the alleged irregularities is ongoing.
